Alcohol Detoxification: How it works
Detoxification in alcoholism is aimed at fulfilling two tasks. First, it is necessary to withdraw alcohol and its breakdown products from the blood as soon as possible in order to stop their toxic effect. Secondly, you need to relieve the hangover, which in patients with alcohol dependence is difficult, and prevent the development of complications.
Detoxification from alcohol
Even at the stage of telephone conversation and questioning of the patient and his relatives, the doctor can assume how difficult it will be to interrupt the binge from the person who has addressed. The longer the drunkenness lasts, the worse the overall health of a person dependent on alcohol, the more pronounced will be the manifestations of withdrawal, the more time will be required for recovery, and the higher the risk of dangerous complications.
With binges lasting 2-3 days detoxification of alcoholics in most cases is carried out at home. The narcologist leaves for the patient, puts drippers, gives drugs that neutralize alcohol toxins and accelerate their excretion. Symptomatic drugs are prescribed that eliminate or significantly relieve many manifestations of withdrawal symptoms: headache, nausea, intestinal disorders, insomnia, depression, and others.
With prolonged drinking bouts, the risk of various complications increases sharply, from acute heart failure and gastrointestinal bleeding to meta-alcoholic psychoses. Therefore, detoxification of alcoholics is carried out within the walls of a specialized Orange county program at narcological clinic or narcological dispensary.
Patients with prolonged binges of a single injection of drugs are not enough – detoxification from alcohol continues on average from 3 to 7 days. To quickly relieve the condition with severe forms of withdrawal symptoms, additional methods of purifying blood using plasmapheresis and hemosorption are used.
Principles of detoxification in alcoholism and the drugs used
When interrupting drinking bouts, doctors set several tasks:
- Quick detoxification. For this purpose, physiological and saline solutions are introduced, abundant drinking and milk-vegetable diet are prescribed, vitamins and preparations that neutralize alcohol (for example, methadoxyl) are used. To detoxify from alcohol in a narcological hospital, plasmapheresis can be used.
- Elimination of sleep disorders, dysphoria, depression. During alcohol withdrawal, all patients have trouble sleeping, most often in the form of insomnia. It greatly increases the flow of the hangover. To combat insomnia, hypnotics and tranquilizers are used. The latter are also effective when the patient has anxiety and a sense of fear.
- Prevention of convulsive seizures. To prevent the development of seizures and reduce cravings for alcohol use anticonvulsants.
- Patients who behave aggressively or have a high risk of suicide are prescribed neuroleptics.
Elimination of disorders from the autonomic nervous system – trembling in the hands, sweating, dry mouth, frequent palpitations, etc., is carried out with drugs from the group of benzodiazepines and some others. The treatment aimed at restoring the enzymatic systems of the body is under way.
